Artist Statement by Dustin Ferguson

On a bright winter day near Elmworth, Alberta, a mule deer buck stands just behind a doe—still, watchful, present. The snow reflects their silence, and the forest holds its breath.

Together captures more than a moment in the rut—it reveals the quiet bond between masculine and feminine, even in the wild. It’s a portrait of instinct and connection, of solitude shared rather than broken.

In the long season of winter, when days are short and the cold is long, this image reminds us that even in nature, companionship is sacred. That presence can be powerful. That being seen, and standing beside, is its own kind of devotion.
